Logic is the analysis of arguments. An argument is formed out of a set of premises and a conclusion. When writing out arguments it is common to number the premises and then separate them from the conclusion by a horizontal line. Introduction to Logic combines likely the broadest scope of any logic textbook available with clear, concise writing and interesting examples and arguments. Its key features, all retained in the Second Edition, include: Propositional logic: formalizing arguments In propositional logic, we look at whole propositions, without looking at what is within them, and we consider the consequences of each one being true, or false. We can have a proposition, like “All foxes are greedy”, and just label it true, or false, without worrying about foxes.

This course is an introduction to Logic from a computational perspective. It shows how to encode information in the form of logical sentences; it shows how to reason with information in this form; and it provides an overview of logic technology and its applications - in mathematics, science, engineering, business, law, and so forth.

This course focuses on the nature of logical inference including both formal and informal reasoning and deductive versus inductive lines of thought. Topics

A statement is a declarative sentence, or part of a sentence, that can be true or false. How many statements are there in this example?

It dates back to Aristotle. It has been studied through the centuries by people like Leibniz, Boole, Russell, Turing, and many others. And it is still a subject of active investigation today. The third edition of Harry Gensler’s outstanding Introduction to Logic (1st ed - 2002, 2nd ed - 2011) is worth having. While there are few substantial additions, the author has labored long and hard to improve the clarity, presentation, and user-friendliness, particularly student-friendliness, of the work. This is a student-friendly approach to logic.” –Michael Bradie, Bowling Green State University "Professor Gensler's Introduction to Logic is superb! Students are given a first-rate, accessible introduction to the fundamentals of logic through extensive examples from some of the great questions in the history of philosophy.
