This book picks up where The Valley of Horses ends; Ayla and Jondalar meet a group known as the Mamutoi, or Mammoth Hunters, with whom they live for a period of time. I find it interesting that in the Clan mythology Durc breaks tradition by going on a journey and for Jondalar's people this is the norm.I think at the end we will see/find out that Ayla's son Durc will set out on some kind of journey ( for whatever reason that may be).Also, the journey of the mythical Durc might represent the divergence of Neandertals and Cro -Magnons. Ayla addressed him once again: „You may now eat what is left. You may pass your water and tidy up, but not otherwise touch yourself. You will stay within sight of one of us all day.
